To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Professor and Musicologist Gil Harel presents a three-part series exploring the bold, evolving voice of American composers and storytellers.

Part III
From Sondheim to Miranda: Revolutionizing the American Musical

Celebrate two transformative geniuses of musical theater: Stephen Sondheim, who redefined the form with intricate, psychologically rich scores and groundbreaking subject matter in masterpieces like CompanySweeney Todd, and Into the Woods, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose innovative fusion of hip-hop, history, and multicultural storytelling in In the Heights and Hamilton brought Broadway to a new, diverse audience. Miranda has openly credited Sondheim as a lifelong mentor and inspiration — sharing early drafts, receiving guidance, and drawing on his mentor’s emphasis on surprise, variety, and rigorous craft to push theater forward.
