Learn about the local places, people and events that influenced Charles Edward Ives, the internationally renowned Modernist musical composer who called Redding home for over 40 years.
Redding’s Co-Historians Bruce Nelson and Brent Colley will discuss Ives’ time in Redding, from his birth in Danbury and early years listening to his father’s band in Brookside Park, to life at his home and studio on Umpawaug Road.
Ives was an American modernist composer who achieved recognition on a global scale in the early 20th centuries. He is credited by musical scholars for being the first to implement many of the devices of Modernism and in 1908 he composed what would become his most famous work, The Unanswered Question, exploring the mysteries of existence.
This program is part of Redding Celebrates America 250, special community events honoring the founding of the United States. This event is part of a concert of patriotic music, including works by Charles Ives, to be performed by the Greater Bridgeport Symphony in collaboration with students from Joel Barlow High School.
