Why should you go? Enjoy a bucolic geology-focused walk through beautiful New Pond Farm Education Center (NPFEC). NPFEC is an environmental education center and working farm with cows, sheep, chickens, stone walls and rolling hills. The landscape at NPFEC reflects the broader landscape of Fairfield County and the Western Connecticut Highlands developed over 400 million years of geological processes driven by plate tectonics, glaciation, and rivers. Highlights include glacier boulders, a boulder of 80% garnet rock, pastures formed on glacial and riverine sediment above marble bedrock, and higher woodlands grown on thin glacial sediments on top of metamorphic gneissic bedrock.

Meet neighbors, new friends and learn along the way–but don’t worry, there won’t be a test at the end!

Things to Know Before You Go: Dress appropriately, with long pants and sturdy shoes. Review these hiking tips.

ABOUT THE REDDING COMMUNITY  HIKING CLUB

The Redding Community Hiking Club, a collaboration between Redding Land Trust and Mark Twain Library, offers family-friendly, guided hikes in our town’s gorgeous open space. Most hikes are led by trustees from the  Redding Land Trust, Town Trail Tenders, (volunteers who maintain both the Town of Redding and Redding Land Trust preserved properties), along with other community members. Typical hikes focus simply on getting outside to enjoy the benefits of nature, outdoor fitness and opportunities to connect with others in our community, and other hikes have a specific educational component, such as plant identification, geology, history, birding, etc.

Note: Space is limited due to parking restrictions and for group safety. Hikes fill up quickly, so register early to attend.

By registering for this event, you permit the Mark Twain Library to share your contact information with our community partner, the Redding Land Trust.

Upcoming Hikes:

Friday, November 27 – Annual post-Thanksgiving hike with Gordon Loery, Redding Land Trust co-president. Time and location to be announced.

Friday, January 1 – Annual New Year’s Day hike with Gordon Loery, Redding Land Trust co-president. Time and location to be announced.
