September Harvest Moon Walk!
Location: Couch Hill Preserve, Redding

Why should you go? The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox, typically falling in September or occasionally October. Its name originates from traditional European farming history, dating back to the era before electricity. This unique celestial timing provided several consecutive nights of bright, early evening light. Farmers relied heavily on this extra illumination to extend their work hours and successfully gather their autumn crops before the first killing frost of the season. Join us on this peaceful walk as we see Couch Hill Preserve under a new light as we listen and identify nighttime wildlife sounds.
Things to Know Before You Go: Feel free to bring a headlamp or flashlight, red light preferred. A limited number of flashlights will be available from the Redding Land Trust. Long sleeves, bug spray, and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Review these hiking tips.
ABOUT THE REDDING COMMUNITY HIKING CLUB
The Redding Community Hiking Club, a collaboration between Redding Land Trust and Mark Twain Library, offers family-friendly, guided hikes in our town’s gorgeous open space. Most hikes are led by trustees from the Redding Land Trust, Town Trail Tenders, (volunteers who maintain both the Town of Redding and Redding Land Trust preserved properties), along with other community members. Typical hikes focus simply on getting outside to enjoy the benefits of nature, outdoor fitness and opportunities to connect with others in our community, and other hikes have a specific educational component, such as plant identification, geology, history, birding, etc.
Note: Space is limited due to parking restrictions and for group safety. Hikes fill up quickly, so register early to attend.
