At one time, department stores were places that women could find a modicum of freedom from a male-dominated world. This nexus of class and commerce allowed women to casually socialize and escape their regimented existences. More importantly, it allowed women to exercise the power of economics, an ability that was often denied to them.
A virtual tour guide from A Tour of Her Own will explore DC streets, strewn with the ghosts of iconic department stores and discuss how a simple shopping excursion was, in fact, so much more to so many women of bygone eras.
